Steve’s Cancer Walk Page: Walking till we find a cure!
Hi Everyone.
My family is no stranger to breast cancer. Years ago my Grandma Betty was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery and treatment and beat the disease, ultimately passing two years ago at the age of 97. More recently, both my wife, Cathy, and her mom, Lourdes were diagnosed. My mother-in-law has been through surgery and a pretty rigorous year of treatment, which is thankfully behind her. Cathy underwent two surgeries (a mastectomy with reconstruction) and is now cancer free. Thanks to early detection, she did not need to undergo any further treatment.
To say that our awareness has been increased would be an understatement. Anyone who has had a loved one diagnosed understands the roller coaster ride that goes along with the diagnosis. This involves fear, followed hopefully by some education and reassurance, and then the trials and tribulations that accompany any treatment. It is clear to me that all of the work done to raise money and awareness for breast cancer has been incredibly valuable. The diagnostic tools are far more accurate than in the past, and the treatment options more effective. However, until a cure is found, people will still have to deal with the disease and everything that goes with it.
I am committed to walking until there is a cure. In addition to my walking, I am very proud to share the experience with our daughter, Grace, who participated on the Boston Youth crew. She was the youngest crew member accepted and found the experience to be incredibly rewarding. She is hoping to be selected as a member of the crew again for the Boston ’11 walk. Last year, she found me during one of the breaks and said, “Daddy, you look lonely. You should make some friends.” I took her advice and joined the “Men With Heart” guys for lunch. They welcomed me with open arms, and I’m proud to be joining them in May as a full-fledged member.
